browser

It perplexes me, the fanatical following that the Gecko engine based Firefox browser has. I find it ridiculous more than anything else. What do these fans really go for? Do they love the cute Firefox logo? Do they simply love the technology behind Firefox and what it as a browser has to offer? Or are some of them just going with the flow, against the grain? Have a read at Nikkita's and SCoooBY's testimonies. They managed to shed some light amidst the madness.

As for me, I use Maxthon which is essentially IE on SP2. I play around with browsers quite a bit, thus far I have Maxthon, Firefox, IE and SlimBrowser on my system. I've just removed K-Melon and long removed Opera and Mozilla.

I've changed my opinion on Opera. I like it now after having tried the latest versions. Currently on their preview version. It's great! A toss between Maxthon and Opera for me now. Firefox is definately out.

  • I have them all on board. In my usage experience:

There's been a great dislike for IE and Micro$oft and there are some clearly justifiable reasons for that as well as paranoiac ones. IE in the raw has committed the gross sin of catering to business instead of the users(popups and all). It is too permissive because of that and M$ does not develop and improve its browser in step with the progressive expectation of users but in accordance with it's own company policy. Also no tab function, thus not saving resources.

Were it not for these intrepid IE shell browsers like Maxthon, Avant, Slim browsers, IE might have followed the original Netscape into underdevelopment and ignominy. Shell browsers also don't use up multi-megabytes.

Avant has a nice Favorite frop down. Maxthon seems a mite faster. Slim has a grave disadvantage that the Favorite drop-down won't function if it's too long. K-Meleon is crip and fast but the display/refresh sometimes gets a little "jumpy" at start. And its IE favorite listing is not orderly just as in Mozilla. Both does not seem capable of refreshing the IE favorite link which is disorderly(not in alphabetical order). Opera is fsst and fine but very sensitive to the smallest hiccups occuring in your System.

I don't seem to be able to see/use the Haloscan comments with FireFox at www.mentaljog.blogspot.com for example.

  • The URL you posted does not seem to work. Blogspot says the URL is not found on its server.

Back to the topic at hand, K-Melon is indeed quite crisp and quick, if not for the fact that it still has lots to improve on, especially their rather primitive looking toolbars, I think it would come out as quite popular. On the whole it's a fuss free browser. I have yet to play around with SlimBrowser more. This one is a lot like Maxthon. I cannot recall what AvantGarde was like, but it was similar to Maxthon.

As for Firefox, the thing is fine, but I find Maxthon offers more, and takes up less memory whilst running. Mozilla was just too bloated for me. Opera was quite nice, but the advertisements on the toolbar was a constant irritant. They should remove it! Or maybe set a number of days after having tried Opera, to enable the ads to start appearing. The chunk of an ad on the Opera browser totally kills the experience for me. It is a rather nice browser to use though. I had no idea it was sensitive to system changes/specifications. Care to share your experiences on it?

  • Ooops ...it's supposed to be www.jogalong.blogspot.com

It's true that Moz browsers take up more memory. There'e in fact a dished up, unofficial version of K-Meleon(Google and ye shall find!) with a German name which looks much better better but unfortunately it always hang on my System....so no go for me.

The latest Avant build and Maxthon are both works great. No more complaint heard of Avant's memeory leak. Amd Maxthon is said to have fixed the last reported vulnerability thing.

Opera imo is the fastest but the freebie version with ads becomes a drag. Yup.

  • The Haloscan link worked for me on that lady's blog. Yes Maxthon has patched the vunerability for the spoofing problem using tabbed browsing. This has in fact affected all browsers that have the tab feature. I was quite impressed that the folks at Maxthon were very quick to fix it.

As for the German version of K-Meleon, I did a search using Google and was led to the original sourceforge site for it. I think I shall give the latest free version of Opera a spin and see how fast it is. Hehehe!

  • Must be my security setting or some conflict with one of the many exyensions on board.

Meantime the link for that private release of that special K-Meleon : http://hch.uwnet.nl/k-meleon/

If you happen to like doing various style cuts of screen capture directly from your browser screen, you may find faststone's 4-in-1 Browser interesting:
    http://www.faststoneserver.com/download.htm
development It has just started development but seems quite ok. It looks snazzy too. :)

  • Oh, thanks for the links. The one on FastStone's pacman caught my eye. Will have a look at the 4 in 1 browser recommended by you. As of today, I have been glued to Opera after downloading it to try. Time will tell if Opera or Maxthon will reign as my primary browser. Hehehe!

You were right, Opera is indeed fast! Astounding really, feels good to see pages load up a fraction quicker even.

  • Nice Pacman but it's not free. Allowed to launch 25 times only....unless you intend to remove and re-install after that. May have to tweak the Registry too. Heheh.
